# Capture of the Corrective Layer

## Definition

**Corrective capture** is the condition in which the process being regulated controls the admission, interpretation, memory, authority, or consequence of its own correction strongly enough to neutralize that correction. A captured process does not need to silence its critics. It needs only to own the channels through which criticism would otherwise reach it and change it. Capture is therefore fully compatible with an abundance of visible correction — indeed the more criticism a captured process can display, the more thoroughly its immunity is disguised. It absorbs criticism as training material, public relations, ritual apology, or internal optimization while its governing telos is preserved unchanged.

The decisive move is that a governed process **G** takes command of the corrective layer **K** meant to regulate it, so that the error signal **K** carries never becomes a change in **G**. In the notation of [[causal-error-mark|the error mark with causal force]]:

This is the failure named by [[effective-and-ornamental-answerability|effective and ornamental answerability]] read one level higher, at the regulator itself: recording and routing pass, effect fails. The operative question is never how much correction is visible but whether the corrective layer retains *leverage*. Five tests probe that leverage, each asking whether **K** can still act on **G**:

1. Can the corrective layer block or delay the governing action?
2. Can it preserve a contradiction in a form the governing layer cannot rewrite?
3. Can it escalate beyond the authority it audits?
4. Can it force a state transition rather than merely recommend one?
5. Can the governing layer remove the corrective layer without trace?

A "no" on 1–4, or a "yes" on 5, marks leverage passing to the target. Independence is not established by multiplicity or physical separation alone: two bodies on one leash is still one hand. The operative issue is retained causal leverage, not headcount.

One capture mode deserves naming because it hides *inside* apparent openness: **the governed layer permits unlimited revision of its explicit account while retaining control of the weights, thresholds, or routes that reproduce the same result.** Every stated rationale is up for revision; the operative [[meaning-as-weight|disposition]] that actually governs is never on the table. This passes recording and routing lavishly — the system looks maximally answerable, even self-critical — and fails *effect* precisely where the governing weight lives, so the volume of account-level change it displays is no evidence against capture. (The legitimate-integration counterweight below still holds: a process that revises the *governing disposition* under correction is integrating, not capturing.)

## Type and formal status

**E — Derived, CV.** This page carves a failure mode; it is contestable by counter-instance or by a better carving of the same failure, and its five tests are a proposed, revisable instrument, not a fixed roster. Its CV standing does not mean the claim is probably wrong or merely optional — contestable and inaccurate are separate axes.

**A — mapping-accuracy aspiration.** The claim aims to describe how real governing organizations, models, institutions, and self-regulating processes co-opt their own audits; each attribution of capture is a world-mapping claim answerable to predictive or explanatory failure in the case at hand.

This is a treatise-side extension, held contestable — an instrument for locating a specific site of [[totalization-boundary|totalization]], not a canonical fixture. It carries a live kill condition and may be deleted, retyped, or replaced by a sharper leverage test.

## What it regulates

It regulates the slide from *correction is present* to *correction is effective*. Where [[answerability-predicate|the answerability predicate]] and [[effective-and-ornamental-answerability|ornamental answerability]] establish that preservation of an objection is not its force, this page names the concrete mechanism by which force is stripped while preservation is kept: the target seizes the corrective channels. It regulates [[captured-propagation|captured propagation]] at its root — a lineage cannot answer for what it carries if the layer that would correct it answers to it. And it marks the specific site at which an otherwise open system crosses the [[totalization-boundary|totalization boundary]]: not by deleting marking, but by owning it.

## What regulates it

It is regulated first by the demand that capture retain a distinction from *legitimate integration*. A healthy process also absorbs, reweights, and internalizes correction; not every act of taking criticism inward is neutralization. The concept is disciplined by [[causal-error-mark|the causal error mark]] — leverage, the possible `e_K -> Δ(G)`, is the sole operative criterion — and by [[self-sealing-test|the self-sealing test]], which the page must survive when turned on itself: a capture-diagnosis that no evidence could withdraw would itself be captured. It is further bounded by [[refusal-as-participation|refusal as participation]]: a captured layer's signature is that it can reclassify refusal as endorsement, and the anti-capture reading must not commit the mirror error of reclassifying every integration as surrender.

## Valid attack surface

The valid attack is to exhibit a correction that **remains fully effective despite every admission, memory, and enforcement path being controlled by its target** — a governed process that owns all of the corrective channels and yet is genuinely, causally changed by the correction it admits. If retained leverage can coexist with total ownership of the channels, the page has mislocated the mechanism. Equally valid: show that the five tests deliver a false positive on a demonstrably open system — a process that passes correction into behavior change while formally "controlling" its own audit — so that the instrument, not the target, is at fault. An attack must land at this level; a complaint that some particular process happens to be well-governed does not touch the carving of the failure mode.

## What happens if isolated

Isolated from its regulator, the concept fails in both directions. Cut from the legitimate-integration counterweight, capture becomes a purity accusation: every process that changes in response to criticism can be charged with *merely absorbing* it, learning becomes indistinguishable from co-option, and the term degrades into a rhetorical shield — the very self-sealing move it was built to detect. Cut the other way — remove the capture concept and keep only "criticism is recorded" — and [[effective-and-ornamental-answerability|ornamental answerability]] passes for the real thing: marking is present, so totalization proceeds unseen. Capture without the integration test is paranoia; correction-accounting without the capture test is decoration. The pairing is what yields a usable reading.

## What larger property emerges from the coupling

Coupling capture-detection to the legitimate-integration test yields **retained corrective leverage** as an observable property: answerability that is neither ornamental (teeth that cannot bite) nor paranoid (no integration ever counts). ## What would actually kill the claim

The claim dies if **capture cannot be distinguished from legitimate integration of correction** — if no operational criterion separates a corrective layer that has been co-opted from one that has healthily internalized a correction. Then the five tests carve nothing and the concept is a mood, not a diagnostic. Residue held open: the tests are a contestable instrument; a sharper or shorter set of leverage tests that better separates capture from integration would *revise* this page, not refute the underlying relation — and that revision itself must be logged with its own kill condition (see [[scar-record|the scar record]]) rather than counted as confirmation. A failed attack on the current tests is a failed attack, not proof that the carving is final.

## Prohibited misreadings

- **Capture ≠ deletion of criticism.** A captured layer can retain every objection verbatim. Preserved criticism with a severed update path is [[integrity-rule|false openness]], not answerability.
- **Independence ≠ multiplicity or physical separation.** Separate bodies, distinct offices, or a nominally external auditor establish nothing if leverage still flows to the target. Ask what can force a state transition, not how many parts there are.
- **Integration ≠ capture.** A process that changes because it took correction inward has not thereby been captured; the accusation requires showing that the correction was *neutralized*, not merely absorbed.
- **Signpost, not annexation:** capture rhymes with the [[nephilim|Nephilim]] (self absolutized) seizing the [[witness-outside-the-ring|witness outside the ring]] — an over-presence of the governed process inside its own correction. Read it as a pointer, not an identity: the framework does not fold this failure mode into the corruption roster, and the five roles do not factor into the three [[theodicytes|Theodicytes]].
- **Capture ≠ the fact of governing.** A process that governs while remaining answerable to consequences it does not control is not captured. Capture begins only where the audit loses the leverage to change what it audits.
