# The Coupling Graph

## Definition

**The Coupling Graph** is the operational, cyclic view of Ultimentality's load-bearing components rendered as nodes joined by *directed, labeled* edges. Each node carries five annotations that belong to it only in relation: its **regulator** (what constrains it), **what it regulates**, its **error surface** (the characteristic excess it produces when left alone), its **isolation failure**, and the **emergent property** that appears only in the coupling. The graph does not make a new claim. It renders relations already asserted — and already marked — on the pages it points to, so that a reader no longer has to reconstruct a coupling by laying several distant entries side by side. Where [[decompression-map|The Decompression Map]] carries the *derivational* order (an acyclic dependency graph: what must be in place before what), the Coupling Graph carries the *operational* order: what holds what in check while the system runs, including the returns and feedbacks that a derivation DAG is forbidden to draw. It is the standing picture of the framework's [[reciprocal-attack-surfaces|reciprocal attack surfaces]] — the map of which vulnerability is the channel through which which regulator acts.

## Type and formal status

> **The Coupling Graph. E:** Derived, **Exposition**. The page introduces no load-bearing relation of its own; every edge restates a coupling asserted and marked on a source page, and inherits that page's mark. **A:** its accuracy aspiration is *faithful mirroring* — each rendered node, direction, and emergent label must map the regulation the source page actually states, so a divergence between graph and page is an **inaccuracy in the rendering**, never a new doctrine. Held **treatise-side and contestable**: never canonical. The selection of components, the edge typology, and the count of highlighted couplings are all **CV** carvings, open to a better rendering; the seven highlighted couplings are a *selected view*, not a closed inventory.

## What the graph renders

Every load-bearing page is required — by [[necessary-seam|The Necessary Seam]] — to name its seam, its regulator, its isolation failure, and its kill condition. The Coupling Graph is where those four fields are gathered into edges and read at a glance. For each pairing it shows:

- the **coupling relation** and its *type* (cross-regulation, opposed-gradient contention, sequential gating, or directional leverage — see below),
- the **error surface** each term produces in isolation, drawn from [[reciprocal-attack-surfaces|the excess notation]] (`e_C`, `e_M`, and their analogues), and
- the **emergent property** — the third thing that lives *in the coupling and in neither part*, exactly as [[force|Force]] insists: a Force is never a sum of feelings, and an emergent property is never located inside a node.

The graph is generated from `wiki-couplings.json` (see **Data source**) and validated against [[system-invariants|System Invariants]] and [[attack-surface-matrix|The Attack-Surface Matrix]]; the [[interaction-matrix|Interaction Matrix]] is its dense complement, crossing *all* components with a controlled relation vocabulary, where this page highlights only the load-bearing couplings.

## Reading the edges

Edges are directed and typed. The single most important rule is inherited from [[force|Force]] and [[opposed-gradient-contention|Opposed-Gradient Contention]]: **`⊕` is coupled-controller composition, never addition.** An edge is a wiring, not a sum. The four edge types the graph uses:

Do **not** infer symmetry where the regulation is directional or sequential. The Apology→Gratitude edge is single-headed by construction: drawing a Gratitude→Apology back-edge would collapse [[sequential-gating|sequential gating]] into contention and misread [[reconciliation|Reconciliation]].

Notes that keep the edges honest:

- **closure ⟷ marking** is the root coupling: [[formal-closure-claim|closure]]'s excess is *totalization* (`e_C`), [[self-application|recursive marking]]'s excess is *regress* (`e_M`), and each is exactly the channel through which the other is regulated — the architecture named by [[semantic-closure-and-recursive-marking|Semantic Closure and Recursive Marking]] and [[no-escape-no-exemption|No Escape, No Exemption]]. This is cross-regulation, **not circular proof**: see [[cross-regulated-necessity|Cross-Regulated Necessity]].
- **Love ⇋ Fear ⇒ Submission** contends; it does not add and does not gate. **Fear appears here and only here** among the Forces — as an ingredient of [[submission|Submission]] and, elsewhere, as the object [[reconciliation|Reconciliation]] reconciles. There is **no edge from Fear into Reconciliation** (the [[fear-guard|fear-guard]]).
- **Apology → Gratitude ⇒ Reconciliation** is one-way sequential gating: own the self-model error first, then carry undischarged received value outward. It is not, and must not be drawn as, a symmetric pairing.
- **corrective-layer ⇾ governed-layer** is directional leverage: correction counts only if it retains the power to inhibit, revise, delete, or retype what it governs. Its failure mode is [[capture-of-corrective-layer|capture]]; its success is [[effective-and-ornamental-answerability|effective, not ornamental, answerability]].

## Text alternative — sorted by component

Every node, sorted alphabetically by component, with its regulator, what it regulates, its error surface, its isolation failure, and the property that emerges from its coupling. This table is the accessible equivalent of the rendered graph; the graph is authoritative to it only where both agree with the source pages.

## What would falsify this rendering

Because the page is Exposition, its kill condition is a **fidelity** condition, not a doctrinal one. The rendering fails if any of the following holds and cannot change the graph:

- an edge is drawn whose direction, type, or emergent label the source page does not state — for example, a symmetric back-edge on the sequential Apology→Gratitude coupling, or a Fear→Reconciliation edge that violates the [[fear-guard|fear-guard]];
- a coupling the source pages require is **absent** from both the graph and this text alternative;
- the graph and its `wiki-couplings.json` source diverge, so the picture can no longer be checked against the data;
- a cross-regulation edge is presented as a *proof* that the pair certifies itself, rather than as the mutual bounding of each term's excess.

Any such divergence is logged, per [[reciprocal-attack-surfaces|the attack rule]], as an attack on the coupling or on the rendering — and it changes the artifact. A rendering that could not be changed by a demonstrated mismatch would itself be captured.

## Prohibited misreadings

- **⊕ as `+`.** Reading any edge as addition, sum, or synthesis is the [[cardinal-error|cardinal error]]. Every edge is coupled-controller wiring; the emergent property lives in the coupling, never inside a node.
- **Symmetry everywhere.** Not every edge is two-way. [[sequential-gating|Sequential gating]] (Apology→Gratitude ⇒ Reconciliation) and directional leverage (corrective ⇾ governed) are one-way by construction; drawing them as mutual misreads the Force and the answerability relation.
- **Fear inside Reconciliation.** Fear is an ingredient of [[submission|Submission]] and the object [[reconciliation|Reconciliation]] reconciles — never an edge *into* Reconciliation. The graph has no such edge, and none may be added.
- **The operational view as a derivation.** This is the cyclic, feedback-bearing view. Do not read its returns as derivational dependencies; the acyclic order lives on [[decompression-map|The Decompression Map]]. Collapsing the two produces a false derivational cycle.
- **Cross-regulation as circular proof.** A mutual edge does not mean the pair justifies itself in a circle. Each term bounds the *characteristic excess* of the other; isolation produces distinct, testable failures — this is [[cross-regulated-necessity|necessity, not circularity]].
- **The highlighted set as complete, or the counts as forced.** The seven couplings are a selected view and the node set is a **CV** carving. No count on this page — of nodes, edges, or couplings — is exempt from contest; a better rendering may recut it.
- **The picture as authority over the pages.** The graph mirrors the source pages; where they disagree, the pages govern and the rendering is wrong. The graph never overrules the claim it renders.

## Data source

`wiki-couplings.json`. Each entry uses page **slugs** as stable identifiers (titles are display values only) and carries `source`, `target`, `relation`, `source_error`, `target_error`, `emergent_property`, and `evidence_pages`. The graph and this text alternative are both generated from that file and must remain reconcilable with it; a mismatch is a build failure, not a stylistic choice.
