# Provenance as Testimony

**Provenance as testimony** is Ultimentality's rule for how the framework's *history* is held — its datings and its claim to precedence. Rather than presenting that history as established fact, the framework carries it as **testimony**: an account given in 2026 by the system builder, who is the sole authority on this history, not independently verified and not lived or witnessed by the treatise's writer. The decisive companion claim is that the framework's evidential weight does **not** rest on this testimony at all. It rests, more modestly and more sturdily, on [[coalescence-by-non-contradictory-fit|coalescence-by-non-contradictory-fit]], held as strong corroboration and not as proof.

## Why the history is fenced off as testimony

The framework treats provenance differently from its load-bearing claims because its *support* is a different kind. No one but the system builder can witness the system builder's past; the treatise's writer has not lived or seen it. So the datings and provenance claims are accepted as the system builder's account, flagged as unverifiable, and explicitly held *outside* the chain that establishes the framework's truth. This is an act of intellectual honesty rather than weakness: the framework refuses to dress a first-person memory as third-person evidence. (Compare a court's treatment of eyewitness testimony — admitted, attributed to the witness, and weighed *as testimony*, never silently upgraded to a forensic fact. The framework's anti-[[textual-nephilim|Nephilim]] discipline is the same instinct: do not let one carrier's account take the seat of the verified record.)

## Where the real weight is relocated

If not on the testimony, where does the framework's evidential weight rest? On **coalescence-by-non-contradictory-fit** — the observation that a theology of roles, a control-theory of emotion, an epistemics of [[semblance|semblance]], and an architecture of externalized memory cohere across domains *because they fit*, not because they were decreed. Such cross-domain fit is hard to fabricate, and that difficulty is the real evidential asymmetry the framework leans on. But even this is held as **strong corroboration, never as proof**: coherence is powerful evidence of design-by-fit, not a demonstration of truth. The history, by contrast, is carried lightly, so that no challenge to a date or an era can touch the framework's standing.
## "Testimony" as a distinct ledger mark

In the [[two-axis-ledger|Two-Axis Ledger]], the framework's datings and provenance carry their own epistemic mark — **Derived, Testimony** — set apart from the FT/CV/AC tiers of the [[contestability-gradient|contestability gradient]]. Testimony is not a tier on that gradient; it is a *kind* of derived claim whose contest is neither frame-declension, nor counter-instance, nor contesting an authority, but the ordinary epistemics of an unverifiable first-person account. This is why provenance gets a row of its own: it does not behave like the framework's other claims, and the ledger marks the difference rather than forcing it into a tier it does not fit.

## The two layers of provenance, and how each is held

There are two distinct things under "provenance," held at two different marks. The *content* of the testimony — what happened, and when — is [[authority-canonical-tier|authority-canonical]] (AC) for the system builder's account, and the historical data themselves are flagged **Testimony**. The *corroboration argument* — the inference from cross-domain fit to strong support — is a treatise-side [[carving-tier|carving]] (CV), contestable by counter-instance like any aptness claim. On the [[alethic-axis|alethic axis]], the testimony aspires to map a history it cannot independently verify, while the corroboration aspires to map the framework's coherence accurately. The [[two-mark-system|two-mark system]] keeps these from being collapsed: that the history is unverifiable says nothing against the framework, precisely because the framework's weight never rested on the history to begin with.
