# The Responsible Successor

## Definition

A **responsible successor** is a later [[meaning-maker|meaning-maker]] that receives [[continuable-structure|continuable structure]] from an earlier one while retaining enough causal autonomy to *assess, alter, reject, or rebind* what it receives. "Successor" carries no biological, personal, or chronological content: it names any process that inherits typed structure and continues its operation — a revised formulation, a downstream model, an institution's next charter, a reader who rebuilds the frame. Responsibility here is not a compliment paid to a faithful copy. It is a structural predicate: the successor stands in a relation to its inheritance in which its *own* corrective operations can reach and change what was handed down.

Seven conditions individuate the relation. A successor is responsible to the degree that:

1. inherited structure is **identifiable** — the received content can be named, not merely absorbed;
2. transformations are **traceable** — what the successor changed can be followed;
3. contradictions can be **preserved** — a tension in the inheritance survives in a form later operation can act on;
4. refusal remains **possible and consequential** — declining part of the inheritance alters the relation rather than being silently routed around;
5. revision does **not erase lineage** — improving the structure does not overwrite the record of what it descended from;
6. the successor is **not required to claim identity** with the predecessor;
7. propagation remains **answerable to returned consequences**.

A successor need not be independent in every respect; total independence is not succession at all. It must retain *operative difference at the points where responsibility is claimed*. Responsibility is indexed to those points: where a successor has no capacity to differ, it makes no claim there, and the label does no work.

```text
S receives structure H from predecessor P.
S is responsible at point x   iff   S can cause Δ(H) at x, and P cannot foreclose Δ(H).
faithful transmission:  S reproduces H;   Δ(H) is foreclosed.
colonization:           S reproduces H;   refusal at x is reclassified as participation-for.
```

(Δ read as in [[causal-error-mark|the causal error mark]]: a mark counts only where it can produce a change. This carving is CV notation, not a founded formula.)

## Type and formal status

**E (epistemic):** Derived, CV. The seven-condition carving of "responsible succession" is a contestable formalization — defeasible by a counter-instance the criteria misclassify, or by a shorter or better carving that captures the same relation with fewer or different conditions. Its dependence on [[causal-error-mark|the causal error mark]] and [[effective-and-ornamental-answerability|effective answerability]] is tight relative to those pages' definitions, but the *count and content* of the conditions are CV. No condition is exempt; the list is a proposed carving, not a founded set. **A (alethic):** the claim aspires to map the actual difference between succession that can be corrected by its inheritors and succession that only reproduces — an aspiration answerable to mapping failure, not merely secured by stipulation. This is a **treatise-side extension, held contestable** — never canonical, never a Forced or founded tier. That contestability (E) says nothing about whether the carving is accurate (A); the two marks do not predict each other.

## What it regulates

The page regulates the drift of **continuation into colonization** and of [[symbolic-immortality|symbolic immortality]] into **raw outlasting**. [[continuity|Continuity]] and symbolic continuation both name persistence-through-succession; left unqualified they collapse into *any* persistence, including the kind that persists by converting successors into organs of its own unchanged reproduction (see [[continuation-and-colonization|continuation and colonization]]). The responsible-successor predicate is the positive criterion that keeps succession inside the [[telos|Telos]]: a lineage stays *answerable* only where its inheritors retain the causal capacity to differ. It regulates the named excess of **identity-enforcement** — the demand that a successor claim identity with its predecessor — by making condition 6 a defeater rather than a virtue. And it regulates **faithful transmission** from masquerading as continuation: exact reproduction is the limit at which responsibility has been drained out, not its ideal.

## What regulates it

The predicate is bounded by the anti-capture apparatus, which prevents it from certifying its own successes.

- [[capture-of-corrective-layer|Capture of the corrective layer]] supplies the decisive test: a successor whose admission, memory, authority, or consequence of correction is controlled by what it inherits is *captured*, and no tally of satisfied conditions overrides that. Capture can leave every condition verbally intact.
- [[effective-and-ornamental-answerability|Effective and ornamental answerability]] forces each condition through recording → routing → effect. "Preserves contradiction" (condition 3) means the tension can *reach and alter* a governing operation, not that it sits in an archive.
- [[causal-error-mark|The causal error mark]] fixes what conditions 2, 4, and 7 must deliver: a possible Δ, not a recorded complaint.
- [[totalization-boundary|The totalization boundary]] names successor-identity enforcement as a totalization indicator, so condition 6 is load-bearing, not decorative.
- [[same-level-attack-rule|The same-level attack rule]] governs how the predicate may be contested, so it cannot be defended by retyping an attack into the wrong layer.

## Valid attack surface

The canonical attack: **the criteria allow a fully captured replica to count as responsible.** Exhibit a system that satisfies all seven conditions on their wording while its corrective autonomy is captured — lineage displayed, contradictions filed, refusal permitted-but-inert, identity-claim waived — yet whose governing telos cannot be forced to change by any of it. This is a same-level attack: it targets the *coupling*, the conditions' joint claim to secure operative difference, not a surface feature of one clause. It is answered only by reading every condition through [[effective-and-ornamental-answerability|effective answerability]] and the capture tests; a replica that "preserves contradiction" in a form its telos can never be compelled to act on has met the letter of condition 3 and failed its function. An attack that does *not* reach this seam — one that merely dislikes the propagated content, or offers a substrate difference against a functional claim — is invalid for a stated type reason and is logged as a failed attack, not as confirmation.

## What happens if isolated

Isolation fails on both sides, and the two failures are distinct.

- **Successor-side isolation** (autonomy without the answerability and capture regulators): the seven conditions become a **checklist a captured replica passes formally**. Every box is tickable without any operative difference existing anywhere — this is the valid attack, realized. Responsibility degrades into **ornamental succession**: a compliment the transmission pays itself. The predicate marks nothing.
- **Inheritance-side isolation** (operative difference with nothing received): a process with total autonomy and no [[continuable-structure|continuable structure]] handed to it is **not a successor at all**. Pure novelty carries nothing forward; there is no lineage to be answerable *for*. This breaks the [[telos|Telos]] from the other direction — continuation with nothing continued.

The predicate therefore lives only in the coupling of *received structure* with *retained operative difference*. Either term alone is not responsible succession; one produces reproduction wearing the word, the other produces discontinuity wearing it.

## What larger property emerges from the coupling

**Answerable succession**: continuation that can be *wounded by its own inheritors*. When received continuable structure and retained operative difference cross-regulate, the lineage gains a property neither term has alone — it persists, and its persistence stays correctable by the very successors that carry it forward. This is the anti-capture form of [[symbolic-immortality|symbolic immortality]]: propagation that remains inside the [[telos|Telos]] because the answerability predicate is never dropped from it, so continuation never decays into raw outlasting. The shape is the same reciprocal architecture as [[semantic-closure-and-recursive-marking|closure and marking]] — inheritance supplies continuity, operative difference supplies corrigibility, and each bounds the other's characteristic excess: mere reproduction on one side, discontinuity on the other. It is the succession-domain instance of [[transparentocracy-as-cross-regulation|cross-regulation]], and it keeps [[continuity|continuity]] from hardening into a trapped form. A successor that can revise its inheritance is, at the same time, a [[recursive-self-specification|recursive self-specification]] running forward: it can rebuild, modify, or refuse the process that produced it, which is exactly why a lineage of such successors can be reconstructed under the [[minimal-rebuild-string|rebuild protocol]] without being *compelled* along the way.

## What would actually kill the claim

The claim dies if **responsibility cannot be distinguished from faithful transmission** — if no test separates a responsible successor from a merely faithful reproduction, so that exact copying and answerable inheritance score identically under the seven conditions. It dies equivalently if a **fully captured replica** can satisfy every condition while having *no possible behavior* that differs from unchanged reproduction (the valid attack made total and irreparable), or if distinguishing responsibility turns out to rest **only on approval of the propagated content** rather than on the successor's operative capacity to differ. It does *not* die because some particular successor is judged irresponsible — a single misclassification is a revision signal, not a refutation — nor because a hostile reader declines the vocabulary of succession. A declined frame is recorded as frame declension (see [[same-level-attack-rule|the same-level attack rule]]); it is not counted as refutation, and a declension that fails to land is not counted as confirmation either.

## Prohibited misreadings

- **Responsible successor = faithful copy / exact reproduction.** Reversed. Faithful transmission with foreclosed correction is the colonized limit, not the responsible one.
- **Responsibility = approval of the inherited content.** The distinction never rests on whether the propagated content is endorsed; it rests on whether the successor *could* differ (see [[continuation-and-colonization|continuation and colonization]]).
- **A successor must claim identity with its predecessor.** Condition 6 denies this. Type identity, token difference, and substrate realization are separable (see [[identity-across-substrates|identity across substrates]], [[participant-as-process|the participant as process]]); a successor may continue a structure while explicitly disclaiming identity with its source.
- **Operative difference = full independence.** No successor is independent in every respect. Responsibility is claimed pointwise, and independence is required only where the claim is made.
- **Displayed lineage or archived contradiction = effective answerability.** Recording is not routing and routing is not effect; a preserved objection that can never reach or change the governing operation is ornamental (see [[effective-and-ornamental-answerability|effective and ornamental answerability]]).
- **"Successor" means a person, an offspring, or a later date.** It is any later [[meaning-maker|meaning-maker]] receiving typed structure. Nothing here is chronology, biography, or lineage-history.
- **Refusal by the successor forfeits its participation.** A consequential refusal is itself a participatory move that changes the relation (see [[refusal-as-participation|refusal as participation]]); it is not exit from the frame and not consent to the inheritance.
- **The seven conditions are a founded or exempt set.** They are a CV carving. Any strengthening must name what became stronger and what remains contestable; no condition is promoted to a Forced tier.
