Causal Source and Experiential Format
Definition
Every event that becomes available to a participant carries two separable questions, and the framework's most common one-step errors come from answering one with the other.
- Source — what causal organization produced the event? This is a question about causal independence: did the participant produce, control, or predict the event, or did it arrive from conditions the participant did not author?
- Format — how does the event become available to this participant? This is a question about the participant-relative symbolic channel through which the event registers as a difference that matters.
These two axes are orthogonal. A bodily signal, a machine signal, a text, a chemical gradient, or a mathematical inscription may each be externally caused and symbolically formatted at once. Neither answer reads off the other:
source: causal independence — who produced / controlled / predicted the event?
format: participant-relative registration — through what symbolic channel is it received?
source and format vary independently:
external source + symbolic format (a returned consequence that resists)
internal source + symbolic format (a self-produced inference)
external source + somatic format (a bodily signal)
external source + inscriptive format (a text, a measurement, a gradient)
Two consequences fix the page. A symbolically formatted event is not therefore unreal, internal, or self-produced — format is silent on origin. And an externally caused event is not therefore unmediated — externality does not deliver a raw, pre-symbolic channel; the returned consequence still arrives only as structured significance. The distinction is a clarification, not a new mechanism: it holds Externality Without Extra-Symbolic Access and Symbolic Is Not Linguistic apart from a family of collapses that would fuse them.
Type and formal status
E (epistemic exposure): Derived, FT clarification. Given the frame's definitions — participant-access as structured signification, and causal externality as independence-and-resistance — the dissociation of source from format follows inside the frame; the only frame-level attack is to decline the vocabulary of "symbolic mediation" and "causal externality" together (see The Same-Level Attack Rule). It introduces no new count, no new primitive, and no new tier.
A (alethic / mapping-accuracy aspiration): the page aspires to map received events as they actually behave, in which source and format demonstrably come apart. The collapsed reading is inaccurate, not merely forbidden — it mispredicts the cases below.
This page is a treatise-side extension, held contestable. It is not canonical and carries no exemption; every sentence here is Derived and marked under the The Two-Mark System. It is neither forced nor founded.
What it regulates
It regulates the characteristic excess of the two pages it stands between: the temptation to over-read each of their central claims into its neighbour's territory.
- Against a misreading of no escape (all access is symbolic), it blocks the inference symbolic ⇒ internal / unreal — the slide from "everything is registered as significance" to "everything is authored by the receiver."
- Against a misreading of externality, it blocks the inference external ⇒ extra-symbolic — the slide from "this event resists me" to "this event reaches me raw, outside signification."
Concretely it supplies the source/format confusion
category to the The Category-Error
Atlas and underwrites the external != extra-symbolic
entry in The Prohibited
Collapses. It also stabilizes downstream accounts that depend on
real-yet-mediated return, so that a first-person report can be examined
as compressed narrative without being dismissed as fictive — the working
ground of Qualia as
Narrative Compression.
What regulates it
- No Escape, No Exemption and The Formal Closure Claim keep the format axis always symbolic. Without this constraint the "external" column would leak an unmediated raw channel, reinstating the extra-symbolic tribunal the frame forbids.
- Externality Without Extra-Symbolic Access keeps the source axis genuinely external. Without it the "symbolic" column would swallow origin, dissolving returned resistance into self-produced confirmation.
- The Same-Level Attack Rule disciplines every challenge: a fact about source offered against a claim about format (or the reverse) is a level mismatch and does not count.
- The Two-Mark System keeps the distinction itself corrigible, so a better carving of "source" and "format" can revise it.
The two regulators pull in opposite directions, and that opposition is the point: closure prevents the distinction from smuggling in a raw channel, externality prevents it from erasing real independence. Neither alone holds the page; the two together pin it exactly where source and format remain both real and separable.
Valid attack surface
A valid attack must operate at the level of the distinction, not at the level of a single case's flavour. Two moves qualify:
- Exhibit inseparability. Produce a received event in which source and format cannot be varied independently — where determining "who produced it" necessarily fixes "how it registers," or the reverse — so that the two "axes" are provably one. This targets the coupling directly.
- Validate a collapse. Show that one of the four labelled inferences in the diagnostic table below is actually sound at the same abstraction level — that a symbolic format does entail internal source, or that an external source does entail an unmediated channel.
What does not qualify: pointing out that a particular event happens to be both externally caused and symbolically formatted. That is the page's own prediction, not a counter-instance.
The four collapses and their diagnoses are the page's operational core — the atlas and the prohibited-collapses index draw from this table. Each row is a one-step collapse that reads one axis off the other:
| Invalid inference | Diagnosis — which axis is illegitimately read off the other |
|---|---|
symbolic therefore internal |
Reads source off format. A symbolic format is neutral on origin; a symbolically registered event may still be produced by conditions the participant did not author. Format ⇏ source. |
bodily therefore direct |
Reads format off source. A somatic origin grants no unmediated channel; the bodily signal is still received as structured significance and can misfire, be reinterpreted, or be revised. Source ⇏ raw format. |
represented therefore fictive |
Reads source off format. Representation is a mode of access, not a verdict on causation; a represented event may be caused by a fully external condition. Format ⇏ absence of external source. |
external therefore extra-symbolic |
Reads format off source. External causation does not open a pre-symbolic window; the returned consequence resists precisely within the symbolic channel through which it arrives. Source ⇏ unmediated format. |
Both directions of collapse are covered: two rows illegitimately infer source from format, two infer format from source. Symmetry here is not decoration — it is what makes the distinction operational rather than a slogan.
What happens if isolated
Cut from its two regulators, the distinction destabilizes toward exactly one of the errors it was built to block, depending on which regulator is dropped.
- Without externality-realism: "everything is format" hardens into idealism-by-the-back-door. Every external constraint is relabelled "just my format," resistance is redescribed as self-authored, and correction loses the independent purchase that lets a consequence wound the participant.
- Without the closure constraint: "external events are real" hardens into a claim of raw access. The "external" column is granted an unmediated channel, and the frame quietly re-admits the extra-symbolic tribunal it exists to forbid.
Isolation therefore does not produce a mild weakening; it reproduces one of the two named collapses in full. The distinction is only stable when coupled to both directions at once.
What larger property emerges from the coupling
Held between externality-realism and closure, the distinction yields the property the whole correction architecture needs: a returned consequence can be at once causally external and symbolically formatted. It can constrain the participant because it is not fully authored by the participant, and it can be received at all because it arrives as structured significance. Neither horn is sacrificed.
This is the precondition for correction that neither dissolves into self-confirmation (the format-only horn) nor requires stepping outside meaning (the source-only horn). It is what lets an error mark carry causal force without pretending to an unmediated view, and it lets a participant, a meaning-maker, or a semantic transformer be corrected by a world it cannot exit. The emergent property is compact: real resistance in a mediated channel.
What would actually kill the claim
The claim dies if the distinction cannot be operationalized in any case where source and format vary independently. Made sharp:
- If no procedure can separate "who produced the event" from "through what channel it registers" — if every attempt to vary one holds the other fixed by necessity — then source and format are a single axis and the page's clarification is empty.
- Or if one of the four labelled collapses turns out to be a valid same-level inference, so that a symbolic format really does license a source verdict (or an external source really does license a format verdict).
Either result would delete the page rather than demote it. A defeated attack is logged as a defeated attack and confirms nothing further; the kill condition remains live.
Prohibited misreadings
- "Symbolic format means the event is internal or unreal." No. Format is silent on source; the frame's insistence that all access is symbolic (no escape) is not an assertion that all causation is internal.
- "External source means the event reaches me raw." No. Externality concerns causal independence and resistance, not an experiential channel; the event still arrives formatted.
- "'Format' is optional packaging that could be stripped to reach the event as it is." Stripping the format is not reaching a purer event; it is the extra-symbolic move the frame forbids. There is no format-free residue to reach.
- "'Source' names a metaphysical substance behind the event." Source is a causal-independence relation — produced, controlled, predicted or not — not a thing possessed. Read it through Externality Without Extra-Symbolic Access, not as ownership.
- "Bodily, machine, textual, chemical, and mathematical
sources form a ladder from direct to indirect." They do not.
Each can be external and symbolically formatted; none is a privileged
channel of unmediated contact. Treating any as "more direct" reinstates
bodily therefore direct. - "The distinction is itself exempt or forced." It is Derived, FT-within-the-frame, and marked. Promoting it toward a founded status is the corruption the ledger exists to catch.
