Occurrent Meaning and Sedimented Meaning

Definition

Significance in a meaning-maker shows two temporal faces, and the page carves the pair that the single word meaning keeps fusing.

Occurrent meaning is presently activated structured significance: significance doing work inside a transformation now underway — the difference that is, at this moment, altering a selection, a routing, a threshold, an action.
Sedimented meaning is retained disposition: the structure by which prior activation alters what may become significant later — the standing bias in what will be admitted, weighted, or discharged when a next occasion arrives.

Sedimented meaning is substrate-plural. Biological memory, ingrained habit, executable code, inherited regulation carried in a genome or a body plan, an archive of records, and the standing institutional rules of a procedure can each hold it — wherever a retained disposition still governs what a later occasion will admit, weight, or discharge as significant. What makes any of these sedimented meaning rather than a passive record is precisely that the retention modulates future significance; the carrier class is not what qualifies it, and no carrier is privileged (see Symbolic Is Not Linguistic).

Neither face is foundational to the other. Sediment is not "stored occurrence" waiting to be replayed, and occurrence is not "sediment made conscious." They are the same operation of significance read at two times, joined by a transition:

sedimented weight -> occurrent activation -> consequence -> revised sediment

Read left to right: a retained disposition (a semantic weight) conditions what activates now; the activation participates in a transformation; the transformation leaves a consequence; the consequence feeds back to revise the disposition that will condition the next activation. The loop is what makes a meaning-maker changeable by what it does rather than a fixed lookup that merely reports its stored contents.

Type and formal status

E (epistemic): Derived, CV. This is a carving — a two-mode partition of significance-in-time plus one transition relation. It is contestable by counter-instance (a temporal mode the two categories cannot express) or by a better carving (a partition that explains revision with fewer or cleaner joints). It is not derived by frame-decline alone, so it does not stand at FT, and no controlling authority fixes it, so it does not stand at AC.

A (alethic): the aspiration is mapping-accuracy — that occurrent/sedimented, and the transition between them, actually track how retained structure conditions present activation and how present consequence revises retained structure. Contestable here means possibly the wrong cut, never probably false and never merely optional; the two axes do not predict each other.

What it regulates

The carving exists to hold apart two excesses that the word meaning invites, each of which severs one arm of the loop:

The present-only reading (occurrentism). Treat meaning as exhausted by what is active now, and nothing learned can persist: the account cannot say why a meaning-maker that has already been corrected behaves differently on the next occasion. This collapses sediment into zero and makes the matter–meaning cycle a sequence of amnesiac flashes.
The storage reading (inert sediment). Treat retained structure as dead data awaiting a reader, and disposition becomes causally idle: the account cannot say how retention changes what may become significant, only how it is fetched unchanged. This severs the -> occurrent activation arm and turns a live regulator into an archive.
The activation-is-consciousness conflation. Occurrent meaning is significance in operation, not a phenomenal glow; it is present wherever a transformation is under way, in a body, a machine, a piece of running symbolic regulation. Reading occurrence as consciousness smuggles first-person ownership into a functional category and re-privileges one carrier class.

By keeping both faces and the transition on the page, each of these is exposed as a partial reading that has dropped a named relation.

What regulates it

The carving does not float free; it is held in by prior pages that fix its terms and police its joints:

Meaning as Weight fixes what a sediment is — a retained relation that modulates how one structured difference affects another — so sediment cannot quietly become a hidden substance or a stored homunculus. Without it, "sedimented meaning" drifts back into inert storage.
The error mark with causal force and the regulated error signal govern the -> consequence -> revised sediment arm: the consequence counts only if it can actually alter the disposition, not merely be logged beside it. A recorded-but-inert consequence fails the transition, and the loop degrades into ornament.
The matter–meaning cycle, and SPLCW returning through a changed world, supply the externality that makes "revised sediment" more than a private self-update: the consequence returns as altered condition, not as self-issued approval.
The same-level attack rule keeps criticism honest — a persistence claim (this sediment endures) is not an attack on an activation claim (this significance is firing now), and neither is settled by pointing at the substrate that carries them.

Valid attack surface

A legitimate attack targets the sufficiency of the two modes and their transition, not the words:

Exhibit a third irreducible temporal mode — a way significance is present-in-time that is neither present activation, nor retained disposition, nor the transition between them, and that cannot be reconstructed from those three. A candidate must show that treating it as activation-plus-disposition (plus their loop) systematically loses a distinction the framework needs, not merely that a different vocabulary is available.
Show the transition is empty — produce a case where consequence provably feeds back yet no reformulation of the loop can distinguish "revised sediment" from "the same sediment re-fetched," so the arrow -> revised sediment labels nothing.
Show the modes are not separable — that any purported occurrent activation is already a disposition and vice versa, so the two-face carving marks one thing twice.

What does not reach the seam: offering persistence against activation, or substrate against function (see Identity Across Substrates). Those are level errors, not counter-instances.

What happens if isolated

Split the coupled pair and each half fails in its own diagnostic way:

Occurrent meaning alone is a phenomenalism with no memory. Significance is only ever now; there is no channel by which a past correction constrains a present activation. Such a system cannot be taught, cannot accumulate continuable structure, and cannot carry a binding's setpoint from one occasion to the next.
Sedimented meaning alone is a dead archive. Retention is complete and nothing fires; dispositions are held but never enter a transformation, so they modulate no consequence and receive no revision. It is a fossilized weight-table, informationally rich and operationally inert.

The two isolation failures are distinct and testable: the first loses retention, the second loses activation. That the failures differ is precisely why the pair is a coupling and not one concept wearing two names — the removal test discriminates them.

What larger property emerges from the coupling

Coupled, the two faces yield revisable significance: a meaning-maker whose present activations can rewrite the dispositions that will govern its future activations. This is learning read as correction rather than accumulation — the semantic-level image of a process changed by its own consequences, the same shape the matter–meaning cycle and SPLCW trace at the level of world-mutation and return.

The coupling here is temporal and sequential — activation feeds sediment feeds activation across time. It is not an affective composite: the loop is not a new ⊕ Force, and reading it as one would import coupled-controller semantics where only a transition relation is claimed. What emerges is not a feeling but the precondition for one — the standing disposition against which any regulated binding carries its setpoint forward. Revisable significance is what lets a participant be the continuity of its own corrections rather than a stack of unrelated presents.

What would actually kill the claim

The claim dies if the distinction cannot explain how a consequence revises what may become significant later — if the transition consequence -> revised sediment can be shown to do no work, so that the two modes name a difference without a mechanism between them. Concretely, the page falls if either:

a competent reader exhibits an irreducible third temporal mode (the valid attack surface above), forcing the two-face carving to be replaced rather than extended; or
the -> consequence -> revised sediment arm is shown to be uninstantiable — every alleged revision reduces, on inspection, to re-fetching an unchanged disposition — so the account cannot distinguish a system that learns from one that merely stores.

A defeated version is deleted or recut, not defended; and an attack that fails to reach the seam is logged as a failed attack, never counted as confirmation that the carving is correct.

Prohibited misreadings

Sediment is not inert storage. A retained disposition that modulates future significance is meaning in operation across time, not a passive record read out unchanged. The moment retention only stores, the transition arm is severed.
Occurrent meaning is not consciousness. Activation is significance doing present work in a transformation; it does not name a phenomenal quality and does not privilege one carrier. Route ownership-language through Qualia as Narrative Compression, not through this category.
The pair is not two substances. Occurrent and sedimented are two temporal faces of one operation of significance, not two things one meaning-maker contains. Neither is the "real" locus with the other as its shadow.
The loop is not a new Force. The transition couples activation and disposition across time; it does not compose them via ⊕ into an affective composite and does not alter the count at the emotion layer.
Revision is not accumulation. "Revised sediment" means the disposition is altered so that what may become significant changes — not that a new item is appended to an untouched store. Storage-plus-append leaves the disposition inert and fails the kill condition.
