Refutation and Frame Declension
Definition
Two attacks can both end with a claim rejected, yet differ in what they touched. Refutation defeats a claim under its own conditions: it accepts the vocabulary, the setpoints, the costs, and the purposes that make the claim available, and shows that within those the claim fails — a same-level counter-instance, an internal contradiction, a binding whose actuator does not reduce its named error, a coupled controller that does not survive its own removal test. Frame declension does not defeat the claim; it refuses the conditions under which the claim would be assessable at all — the terms, the aims, the price of admission. The first is immanent: it lands inside. The second is transcendent to the case: it steps out rather than losing within.
Both are legitimate. The two-axis ledger already fixes this — a
[frame-internal (FT)](frame-internal-tier.html) claim
follows from accepted definitions, so the only attack on it is
to decline the frame; a [carving (CV)](carving-tier.html)
claim invites counter-instance from within. What this page adds is that
the two modes are non-fungible: neither may be
performed under the name of the other, and declension — though permitted
— is never free.
Type and formal status
Refutation / frame declension. E: Derived, CV — a two-way carving of how attacks land, contestable by counter-instance (a third irreducible mode of attack) or by a better carving (a boundary criterion that supersedes this one). It introduces no forced or exempt tier; the distinction is itself Derived and marked, and answers to the same standard it describes. A: the carving aspires to track a real joint — the difference between a frame that lost and a frame that was left is a difference in the world of the dispute, not merely in our description of it; the aspiration is inaccurate if that joint proves undecidable where it is load-bearing. This is a treatise-side extension, held contestable, downstream of
[the falsification standard](falsification-standard.html). It is not canonical and claims no authority beyond the discriminating work it does.
What it regulates
It regulates the flattening of the attack surface into a
single kind. Two collapses threaten
[the standard](falsification-standard.html):
- If every rejection is scored as internal refutation, then
declining the frame is treated as illegitimate or as unintelligible
noise. The frame becomes the only sayable frame; an objection must be
spoken in its cases or dismissed. That is
[absolutization](absolutization.html)of the vocabulary — the frame exempting itself from the possibility of being left. - If every rejection is scored as declension, then no claim
can be defeated on its own terms; any same-level contradiction is
rerouted as "you simply do not accept our terms." The frame is sealed,
the
[self-sealing test](self-sealing-test.html)fails, and the maintainer has installed the shield the anti-evasion rule forbids.
The excesses, and the channel each is regulated through:
e_R = totalization (only-refutation: the frame becomes the only permissible vocabulary)
e_D = self-sealing (only-declension: every internal defeat is rerouted as refusal)
e_R -> declension the standing possibility of declining the frame keeps it non-total
e_D -> refutation a same-conditions defeat cannot be declined away
The errors are not the two modes themselves; they are the excesses
each mode develops in isolation. So the page supplies exactly
the discrimination
[the falsification standard](falsification-standard.html)
demands — that declension not be misreported as internal refutation, and
that refutation not be dodged as declension — and it marks the seam
between [FT](frame-internal-tier.html) and
[CV](carving-tier.html) claims where the two modes
divide.
What regulates it
[The same-level attack rule](same-level-attack-rule.html)fixes what counts as a genuine internal refutation — right type, right abstraction level. Without it, "refutation" is unbounded and any mismatch could pose as an internal defeat.- The anti-evasion test, a sub-rule of the
[self-sealing test](self-sealing-test.html), forbids converting a same-level contradiction into declension, and forbids smuggling a contradiction in under the banner of principled refusal. It runs in both directions. - The cost ledger: a decliner must state which
explanatory and operational capacities are surrendered or replaced.
Because
[refusal is itself participation](refusal-as-participation.html)— it selects, routes, signifies, and leaves a consequence — a declension is not an exit from assessment; it can be priced. [Causal falsifiability](causal-falsifiability.html): a declension logged but producing no change in what is done is ornamental; a refutation that alters nothing is a logged failed attack, not a defeat.- Its own CV mark: the two-way carving is contestable. A demonstrated third mode, or an undecidable boundary, revises it.
Valid attack surface
Attack the distinction at its own level, not by anecdote. A valid
attack either (1) exhibits a third irreducible mode —
an attack that is neither a same-conditions defeat nor a
refusal-of-conditions, yet is a real attack the binary cannot host (a
partial-frame or oblique-frame attack that the FT/CV split genuinely
cannot represent); or (2) shows the boundary is undecidable in a
load-bearing case — that no criterion separates "lost inside
the frame" from "declined the frame" exactly where the discrimination is
needed, so the distinction does no regulatory work. Contesting the
labels while granting the two operations is not an attack on
the claim; it is a better-carving proposal, which the CV mark already
invites — see
[attack-type matching](attack-type-matching.html).
What happens if isolated
The two isolation failures are the error channels made concrete.
- Refutation without declension → totalization. If the frame cannot be declined, only defeated from inside, it silently becomes the horizon of all permissible speech; every rival must translate into its cases before it may object, and untranslatable objections vanish. This is closure with no outside — the frame claiming to be the whole of meaning rather than one carving within it.
- Declension without refutation → self-sealing. If
nothing can be defeated on its own terms, every internal contradiction
is answered by "you decline our frame," and the frame is immunized
against its own marks. This is the
[textual Nephilim](textual-nephilim.html)at the level of method: the frame promoted beyond attack, exempt while everything else stays contestable.
Each isolation manufactures precisely the excess the other mode
checks — which is why they are not two separable tools but a
cross-regulated pair, a local instance (signpost, not identity) of the
[reciprocal-attack-surfaces](reciprocal-attack-surfaces.html)
pattern and, above it, of
[no escape, no exemption](no-escape-no-exemption.html).
What larger property emerges from the coupling
Held together, the pair yields honest, typed, costed
contestability: an attack surface that is neither a fortress
(only-internal-refutation, no exit) nor a frictionless dodge (everything
is declension). At any resolution one can say which happened —
the frame lost on its own terms, or the frame was left for another
vocabulary — and, if it was left, at what price. This is the
discrimination
[the falsification standard](falsification-standard.html)
presupposes and the condition under which
[postfalsifiability](postfalsifiability.html) stays honest:
a formulation that dies to a same-conditions defeat is a genuine
[deletion or revision](outcomes-of-attack.html), whereas a
vocabulary merely abandoned is a change of subject, not a kill — and
neither may be booked as the other. Residue: the pair presumes rival
frames share some consequence on which cost is legible. Where
two frames are fully incommensurable, the price of declension becomes
unstatable and the coupling thins toward the kill condition below.
What would actually kill the claim
The distinction dies if either holds:
- The shield operates without cost. A maintainer repeatedly reroutes a genuine same-level internal contradiction into "you decline our frame," and the system records no surrendered capacity and changes nothing. Then the anti-evasion test is inert, declension is doing refutation's dodging for free, and the two modes are not in fact kept distinct — the page describes a discipline it does not enforce.
- No shared consequence exists. If rival frames share no consequence whatsoever, declension can never be priced and cross-frame comparison is impossible; "cost of declining" is undefined, and from outside there is no way to tell a frame that lost from a frame that was left. The joint the carving claims to track is then simply not there.
Either is a same-level defeat and would force deletion or a re-carving, not a footnote. A failed attempt to exhibit a third mode is logged as a failed attack; it is never counted as confirmation that the binary is complete.
Prohibited misreadings
- Declension is not defeat of the objector, and not
illegitimate. Declining the frame is a permitted move — the
only available attack on an
[FT](frame-internal-tier.html)claim. Treating a decliner as having "conceded" inverts the ledger. - Declension is not free. It surrenders or replaces explanatory and operational capacities; the decliner owes the cost ledger. "I reject your terms" without an accounting is an assertion, not yet an attack.
- Do not use declension as a shield. Answering a
same-level internal contradiction with "you merely decline our frame" is
the anti-evasion violation — a
[self-sealing](self-sealing-test.html)failure and, sustained, the[textual Nephilim](textual-nephilim.html). The reverse is equally barred: a genuine internal contradiction may not be re-dressed as principled refusal. - A failed refutation is not confirmation. A same-conditions attack that does not land is a logged failed attack, never evidence that the claim is true or that the frame is complete.
- Refutation and declension are not interchangeable.
They touch different things and carry different bills; scoring one as
the other is a category error that corrupts every downstream
[outcome](outcomes-of-attack.html). - This distinction is not itself frame-exempt. It is
[Derived](derived.html), CV. A third mode of attack or an undecidable boundary revises it; it claims no exemption it denies to others.
