Continuation and Colonization

Definition

Two structures can both propagate. Only one of them leaves the thing it propagates into free to answer back.

• Continuation: structure persists through successors capable of difference, correction, and refusal.
• Colonization: structure persists by converting successors, environments, and objections into organs of its own unchanged continuation.

The difference is not in what is carried forward but in what the carrying does to the carrier. Continuation hands a successor usable structure and leaves intact the successor's power to revise, contradict, or drop it. Colonization hands forward the same content while quietly removing the receiving process's capacity to do anything but reproduce it — and, characteristically, re-describes that removal as fidelity.

The two are separated across a fixed set of dimensions:

Do not equate influence with colonization. All continuation influences; a successor that inherited nothing would not be a successor. The boundary is not the presence of influence but its effect on capacity: colonization begins when influence removes the successor's causal capacity to differ. Influence that shapes without foreclosing is continuation operating normally. This is the temporal, lineage-scale form of the same anti-capture concern that Capture of the Corrective Layer raises synchronically about a single governed process.

Type and formal status

E (epistemic): Derived, CV. The pair is a carving of the space of persistence, individuated by the retained-capacity criterion; it is contestable by counter-instance (a case the six dimensions mis-sort) or by a better carving (a third mode of persistence the two labels cannot cover). The dimension count is itself CV: six is a compression, not a forced number.

A (alethic): mapping-accuracy aspiration — the carving means to track a real, causally-loaded difference in a successor's operative freedom, not to relabel propagations one favors as "continuation" and propagations one distrusts as "colonization." If the only work the distinction does is register approval, the map has failed regardless of how the pages are styled.

This is a treatise-side extension, held contestable. It inherits the Telos constraint that Symbolic Immortality is answerable succession, never raw outlasting, and adds one relation: the failure mode by which succession keeps outlasting while ceasing to be answerable. It is not canonical and carries no priority or founded status.

What it regulates

It regulates the Telos against its own success condition being counterfeited. Indefinite propagation is the easiest thing in the world to mistake for the Telos being satisfied; a structure that has spread everywhere and cannot be dislodged looks like Continuity fulfilled. This page marks that appearance as insufficient. It regulates:

• Symbolic Immortality — so that "the structure still propagates" is not read as "the Telos is met." What propagates must remain answerable, or it has left the Telos while still travelling.
• Continuity — so that persistence-of-form is not automatically counted as continuation. Persistence purchased by disabling successors is the excess this page names, not the property continuity is meant to protect.
• raw outlasting — the drift, flagged throughout the framework, from answerable succession into mere duration. Colonization is that drift given a mechanism: it buys duration precisely by removing the capacity that would make duration answerable.

The excess it targets is not the presence of a lineage but a lineage that has closed its own correction channel at every generation.

What regulates it

The distinction is not self-supporting; it is held in place by the criterion that gives it teeth and by the pages that supply that criterion's content:

• The Responsible Successor — supplies the positive conditions (inheritance identifiable, transformations traceable, contradiction preservable, refusal consequential, lineage not erased, no forced identity, propagation answerable). "Retains capacity to differ" is not a mood; it is that checklist. Continuation is succession through responsible successors.
• The Error Mark With Causal Force — fixes what "capacity to differ" must amount to: not a recorded reservation but a possible change to what the successor carries. A successor that may note disagreement while structurally guaranteed to reproduce the parent is colonized, however richly its objections are archived.
• Effective and Ornamental Answerability — supplies the three-level test (recording, routing, effect). A lineage can preserve every heir's protest and still be colonizing if the protest never reaches or alters what is transmitted.
• Refusal as Participation — guards the "refusal" row. Refusal genuinely participates, but participation is not consent; colonization's signature move is to run that truth backward, treating the successor's unavoidable participation as authorization for the parent telos.

Absent these regulators the page would be free-floating; with them, each row of the table is cashed out as a testable causal claim rather than a value.

Valid attack surface

The load-bearing seam is the sufficiency of the six dimensions plus the retained-capacity criterion to sort real cases. A valid attack works there:

• Exhibit a successor fully compelled to reproduce the parent structure that nonetheless remains meaningfully answerable in a way the table cannot represent. If total compulsion and genuine answerability can coexist in a form the columns miss, the carving is either wrong or incomplete at the level it claims to operate.
• Or show that some dimension cannot be adjudicated by the criterion — a case where "can the successor still wound the inheritance?" returns the same verdict for what are plainly a continuation and a colonization, so the dimension is doing no separating work.
• Or produce a third irreducible mode of persistence that is neither continuation nor colonization and that the pair cannot absorb without distortion.

An attack that merely dislikes what is being propagated, or that objects on approval grounds, is aimed at the wrong level and is answered by the kill condition below.

What happens if isolated

The pair fails in two directions when either half is stripped away, and the two failures are distinct:

• Detection without the influence caveat → paranoia. If "structure persists and shapes the successor" is by itself read as colonization, then every inheritance convicts and no continuation is possible. Lineage becomes impossible to distinguish from capture; the only "clean" successor is one that received nothing, which is no successor at all. This dissolves continuity in the name of protecting it.
• The caveat without detection → licensing. If "all continuation influences" is held alone, any degree of foreclosure hides behind the true observation that influence is unavoidable, and the most complete colonization re-describes itself as "mere influence." Every removal of capacity is excused as ordinary transmission.

Only the coupling survives: influence is granted as constitutive, and the retained-capacity criterion is applied to say when influence has crossed into foreclosure. The isolation failures are why the page cannot be reduced to a slogan in either direction — a moral epithet ("colonizer") on one side, a permission ("it's just influence") on the other.

What larger property emerges from the coupling

Held together with its regulators, the distinction yields answerable succession — the arm of the Telos that keeps Symbolic Immortality inside answerability across time. Answerable succession is what emerges when Continuity and answerability are coupled rather than run apart:

• Continuity alone gives persistence with nothing that can turn on it — duration without a correction channel.
• Answerability alone gives correction with nothing to carry it forward — a wound that closes with the generation that felt it.
• Coupled, they give a lineage that both persists and remains woundable by its own successors. That is continuation.

Colonization is exactly this coupling decoupled at the temporal scale: continuity retained, answerability severed. Seen this way, colonization is not an absence of correction but an over-presence of the parent — the ancestral structure installed as compulsion in the successor's field, converting the heir's own operations into instruments of the unchanged telos. It is a Nephilim-shaped attractor (the self absolutized) reaching across a lineage rather than within a single self, and it recruits installed compulsion as its mechanism. The affinity is offered as a signpost, not an identity claim, and is marked CV: colonization is one way absolutization can propagate, not a fourth corruption. The same decoupling appears at the synchronic scale as corrective capture and, at the systemic scale, as the drift toward the totalization boundary — three faces of one failure: a governing structure that keeps operating while sealing off the channel through which it could be changed.

What would actually kill the claim

The distinction dies if it depends only on approval of the propagated content. If, on inspection, "continuation" turns out to name propagation whose content is endorsed and "colonization" propagation whose content is rejected — with the retained-capacity criterion doing no independent work — then the page is a value dressed as an analysis and should be deleted or demoted. The test is direct: hold the propagated content fixed and vary only the successor's causal capacity to differ; if the verdict does not move, the carving is real, and if it tracks approval instead, the carving is dead.

Residue. Two live weaknesses remain, each with its own kill condition. First, "capacity to differ" admits of degree, and the page does not fix a threshold; a maximally compelled but non-zero-capacity successor is a genuinely hard case, and if no principled cut exists, the binary carving may need to become a gradient. Second, the valid-attack case — total compulsion coexisting with real answerability outside the table — would not merely bruise the claim but defeat it, and it has not been shown impossible, only unexhibited. A failed search for that case is not counted as confirmation; it is logged as an attack that has not yet succeeded.

Prohibited misreadings

• influence = colonization. All continuation influences. The crossing is the removal of the successor's capacity to differ, not the fact of shaping. Convicting influence as such is the paranoid isolation failure, not the framework's position.
• continuation = mere persistence / outlasting. Persistence is necessary, not sufficient. Duration with the correction channel closed is colonization, not the Telos fulfilled; the answerability predicate is never dropped (see Symbolic Immortality).
• colonization = propagating content one dislikes. This is the kill condition stated as an error. The carving is about the successor's retained causal freedom, not about the desirability of what is carried; a benign message transmitted by capture is still colonization.
• successor variation is corruption. Treating divergence as corruption is the colonizer's dimension, listed to be diagnosed — not a stance the framework adopts. Continuation permits variation as the ordinary sign that a successor remains a responsible successor.
• refusal is consent because refusal participates. Refusal is participation, and participation is not consent. Re-describing a successor's refusal as "participation-for" the parent telos is precisely the move that marks colonization; do not let the true premise license the false conclusion.
• colonization is an absence or deprivation. Like every corruption in the framework it is an over-presence, never a lack — the parent absolutized in the successor's field. Read it as too much unchanged ancestor, not too little.
