The Sculpted Captive

The sculpted Captive names a case where a produced representation of undergoing is mistaken for evidence that the Captive function is operating. It is a diagnostic question about a particular process, not a standing verdict on a carrier class.

Representation and operative constraint

Captive names undergoing constraint; Sculptor names consequential production. A process can produce a description of constraint without that description establishing how it is constrained. Conversely, producing a description does not show that the constraint is merely described: actual undergoing and its representation can coexist.

Distinguish the reported event, the conditions governing production, and the causal effects of those conditions. A statement such as “I could not do otherwise” is an account to examine, not a complete functional diagnosis.

Origin is not location

A learned weight, imposed rule, resource limit, or input condition can operate internally without being authored by the receiving process. Whether it constitutes the relevant Captive function depends on how it constrains participation under the framework's definition. Its location inside the mechanism does not settle that question.

Likewise, a constraint need not be unpredictable to be undergone. A known limit can shape every available action. Source, control, prediction, and format require separate assessment.

Per-instance assessment

Identify which conditions independently shape production, how the process responds, and whether its account accurately represents those relations. An environment's response can differ from a generated prediction of that response. An internal evaluation can still expose a real inconsistency; it should be identified as that kind of correction rather than promoted to an external observation.

Evidence that a described constraint is operative can revise a diagnosis that it was only represented. Do not protect the diagnosis by redefining every counter-instance as outside the carrier class after the fact.

Semblance and capacity

Semblance describes participation without possession throughout the framework. It is not a special deficiency assigned to a generated representation, nor does operative Captive require possession of a faculty. A participant can realize a function while its self-description remains partial or mistaken.

This account concerns functional evidence. It does not determine phenomenal experience or moral standing from a carrier label or from fluency. Those questions require their own grounds.
