Gratitude
In this framework, Gratitude is an act of passing something on, not a warm glow: it is propagation that discharges undischarged received value — the move of emitting outward, working to shrink the gap between value you have received and value you have carried forward. Formally it is the predicate binding Gratitude = (propagation, undischarged received value): the directional operator propagation driven by a controller whose target is to discharge received value into continuation. When value has been received but not yet passed on, the controller pushes to emit it; as it is carried forward, the error shrinks toward zero. Gratitude, on this account, is the discharge, not the feeling of being grateful.
How it works
The three parts of the binding: the actuator is propagation, the primitive that emits transformed structure into the field, another system, a medium, a trace, or a future state. The controller is named "Gratitude." The regulated error signal is undischarged received value — the discrepancy between value received and value carried forward. The controller drives that discrepancy toward zero.
The framework names the contrast directly and memorably: ingratitude hoards it; Gratitude discharges it into continuation. This is the diagnostic. Gratitude is not measured by how warmly value is felt but by whether it is moved onward. The layer's accuracy discipline holds — extract the regulated error (undischarged received value), not the surface delivery channel. By analogy only, and not as doctrine: a river stays alive by flowing through, not by pooling; Gratitude is the flowing-through of received value, where ingratitude is the stagnant pool. The comparison is illustrative; the framework's claim is the control loop, not the river.
Place on the Routing axis
Gratitude sits on the Routing axis — the side of a transformation step that decides where the result goes. Its actuator routes outward, emitting into the field or the future. Its counterpart is Apology = (loop-back, self-model error), whose actuator routes inward, back into the self. Apology corrects the self-model; Gratitude carries value out. They are the two directions of one axis, which is what lets them couple into a single composite.
Role in the wider framework
Gratitude is one of the four cornerstone bindings, stated verbatim across the canon. It is an ingredient of Reconciliation = Apology ⊕ Gratitude, coupled with Apology by sequential gating: the fault must be owned before value is carried outward. The order is not decorative. When Gratitude is allowed to run ahead of Apology — when value is discharged warmly while the self-model stays false — the composite collapses into its canonical failure, the sentimental form: Gratitude swamps Apology, the relationship feels mended, and nothing has actually been corrected. Gratitude's binding is thus genuine only when it follows the gate of Apology.
Common misreadings
The cardinal error: treating Gratitude as a primitive rather than a binding over propagation — the cardinal inversion, which caps any exposition at 72. The characteristic error: equating Gratitude with the feeling of being grateful rather than the discharge of received value; hoarding while feeling grateful is ingratitude in the framework's sense. The structural error: letting Gratitude swamp Apology, producing the sentimental form. And the general error: reading the binding as preservation of an invariant rather than regulation toward a setpoint.
Formal status. Epistemic: Derived, authority-canonical — fixed verbatim by the controlling authority; contestable by contesting the authority. Alethic: the binding aspires to map the regulated error actually driving the named emotion; extract the regulated error, not the surface delivery channel. Provenance: canonical, fixed verbatim across the canon.
